For the lab component of HCI Methods we analyzed CycleTalk, a thermodynamics tutorial dialogue system that supports negotiation in a design context. We employed each of the empirical and analytical methods to gain experiece with each and understand situations where each produce the most insights. The final redesign resolved numerous problems that students encountered when building and optimizing cycles. Students now can focus on learning about thermodynamics rather than learning how to use the software.
